Wildscope is an environmental and biodiversity initiative based in Murbad, Maharashtra. We focus on wildlife research, biodiversity documentation, habitat conservation and nature education in and around Murbad.
Our story
Murbad sits at the foothills of the Sahyadri, where farmland, streams, grasslands and forest patches support a remarkable variety of birds, insects, reptiles, mammals and plants. Much of this local diversity is poorly recorded, and many people living alongside it rarely get the chance to learn about it.
Wildscope was started to change that: to observe and document the living landscape around Murbad carefully, to make that knowledge freely available, and to help people of all ages experience it first-hand.

Vision
A Murbad region whose wild plants and animals are well understood, valued by the people who live here, and protected for the generations to come.
Mission
We work to observe, study, conserve, protect and educate:
- Observe — spend patient, respectful time in the field watching and recording wildlife and plants.
- Study — identify and document species carefully, and support biodiversity research.
- Conserve — support the protection of habitats that local species depend on.
- Protect — keep sensitive species and locations safe from disturbance and misuse.
- Educate — share knowledge through nature trails, workshops and resources in English and Marathi.
Objectives
- Document the flora and fauna of Murbad and its surroundings, and build a growing, verified biodiversity record for the area.
- Encourage and support biodiversity research by students, researchers and citizen scientists.
- Conduct guided nature trails, birdwatching walks, workshops and educational programs.
- Increase public participation in observing and conserving local biodiversity.
- Build a reliable biodiversity knowledge resource focused on Maharashtra, in English and Marathi.
Our approach to conservation
We believe conservation starts with knowing what is there. Careful documentation, shared openly, helps local communities, students and decision-makers understand the value of the landscape around them. We work alongside people, not against them, and we try to keep our claims modest and backed by evidence.
Where we work
Our work is centred on Murbad taluka in Thane district, Maharashtra, and the surrounding countryside. To protect wildlife, we describe locations in general terms and never publish the exact sites of nests, roosts, dens or rare plants.
Scientific documentation & ethical fieldwork
- We keep observations separate from assumptions, and label identifications as confirmed only after they have been checked.
- Conservation statuses are quoted with their source and assessment year.
- We do not bait, chase, handle or disturb animals for photographs, and we do not collect plants or animals.
- We stay on paths, keep groups small and quiet, and leave places as we found them.
- We ask permission before photographing identifiable people, and credit every photographer.
- Sensitive locations are generalised or withheld.
